Malachi Buschl (born 15 October 1999)[1] is afield hockey player fromNew Zealand.[2]
Malachi Buschl was born inTauranga, and grew up inDunedin,New Zealand.[3][4]
He is a former student ofKing's High School.[5]
Buschl plays domestically in his home country of New Zealand.[6] In thePremier Hockey League he represents theSouthern Alpiners.[7][8] He also plays in theFord National Hockey Championship, where he represents his home region ofOtago.[9]
He represented theNew Zealand U–21 team at the2018 and2019 editions of theSultan of Johor Cup inJohor Bahru.[10]
Buschl made his senior international debut for theBlack Sticks in 2018. He earned his first seniorcap during a test match againstIndia inBengaluru.[4] He also made more appearances later that year during a test series againstCanada inAuckland.[10]
He did not represent the national team again until 2023, when he returned to the side for the2022–23 FIH Pro League.[10] Since his return, Buschl has been a regular member in the national squad, going on to win numerous medals with the national team. He won silver at the2023 Oceania Cup inWhangārei, bronze at the2024 Sultan of Johor Cup inIpoh, and gold at the2023–24 and2024–25 editions of theFIH Nations Cup inGniezno andKuala Lumpur, respectively.[11][12][13]
In 2024 he became an Olympian, representingTeam New Zealand at theXXXIII Olympic Games inParis.[3][14]
He has most recently been named in the squad for the2025 Oceania Cup inDarwin.[15][16]
