Machaon fatheredNicomachus and Gorgasus byAnticleia , daughter ofDiocles ofPharae .[ 2] His other sons wereAlexanor ,[ 3] Sphyrus [ 4] andPolemocrates .[ 5]

Both Machaon and Podalirius were highly valued surgeons and medics.[ 7] In theIliad , he was wounded and put out of action byParis .[ 8] Machaon (or his brother) healedPhiloctetes ,Telephus andMenelaus , after he sustained an arrow at the hand ofPandarus , during the war. He was also supposed to possess herbs which were bestowed to his father Asclepius byChiron , the centaur.[ 9]
He was killed byEurypylus in the tenth year of the war.[ 10] He was buried inGerenia inMessenia , where he was worshiped by the people.
In the account ofDares the Phrygian , Machaon was illustrated as ". . . large and brave, dependable, prudent, patient, and merciful."[ 11]
