Maipú Department is a department and municipality located in the north west ofMendoza Province inArgentina.
The department covers 617 km2 (238 sq mi) and a population of 153,600 (2001census[INDEC]); its capital isMaipú.
The department was created in 1858 and named in memory of theBattle of Maipú, which took place inChile, 1818 during the South American Wars of Independence.
Maipú is home toDeportivo Maipú, afootball club that play in the regionalised3rd Division.
