Maintenon (French pronunciation:[mɛ̃tənɔ̃]) is acommune in themetropolitan area ofParis,France. It is located 63.5 km (39.5 mi) southwest of thecenter of Paris.
Maintenon, together with the neighbouring commune ofPierres, form an urban area of 7,075 inhabitants (2017).[3]
Maintenon is known for its picturesqueChâteau de Maintenon, first home to thefamily d’Angennes, Marquis de Maintenon, later home ofMadame de Maintenon,morganatic second wife of KingLouis XIV.
Another tourist attraction is the ruinedaqueduct of Maintenon, built by Louis XIV to carry water from theEure to the gardens of thePalace of Versailles.
