Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin ShahKStJ (Jawi: سلطان محمود المكتفي بالله شاه ابن المرحوم سلطان إسماعيل ناصر الدين شاه; April 1930 – 14 May 1998) was the 17thSultan of Terengganu reigning from 21 September 1979 to 14 May 1998.

Life

Sultan Mahmud was born on 29 April 1930 inKuala Terengganu. He was married polygamously to both Tengku Besar Terengganu Fatimah Sharifah Nong Alsagoff binti Abdillah (1938–2023) andTengku Ampuan Bariah (1933–2011), sister of SultanSalahuddin of Selangor.

Mahmud's father SultanIsmail Nasiruddin died in 1979. He was crowned as the Sultan of Terengganu in 1981 and Tengku Ampuan Bariah became Tengku Ampuan Besar of Terengganu.

Sultan Mahmud was thecolonel for theRoyal Armoured Corps (KAD) of theMalaysian Army.from 1979 until 1998.

He was a close friend of his advisorTan Sri Wan Mokhtar Ahmad, theMenteri Besar (chief minister) of Terengganu from 1974 to 1999. His main goal was to make Terengganu a developed state. Major state projects and developments during his reign includedPetronas Petroleum Complex inKerteh,Sultan Ismail Power Station atPaka, the largest power station inMalaysia,Kenyir Dam,Sultan Mahmud Bridge, the bridge linking Kuala Terengganu to Pulau Duyong and Kuala Nerus,Wisma Darul Iman and theTengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque (Floating Mosque).

He performed thehajj pilgrimage with his brother-in-law, Sultan Salahuddin of Selangor in 1984.

Death

On 14 May 1998, he died inMount Elizabeth Hospital,Singapore and was succeeded by his sonSultan Mizan Zainal Abidin. His body was then laid to rest in the new Royal Mausoleum nearAl-Muktafi Billah Shah Mosque inKuala Terengganu. He was the first sultan of Terengganu to be buried there.
