ProfessorMaheswar Neog (7 September 1915 – 13 September 1995) was anIndian academic who specialised in the cultural history of theNorth East India especiallyAssam, besides being anAssamese-languagescholar andpoet.[1][2][3][4] He was a top Indologist, and his work covers all disciplines ofIndian studies, folk-lore, language, dance, history, music, religion, drama, fine arts, paintings,historiography andhagiography,lexicography andorthography,epigraphy andethnography. His research includes multi-dimensional features ofVaishnava renaissance in Assam throughSrimanta Sankardev,Madhabdev,Damodardev, Haridev, Bhattadev and otherVaishnava saints ofAssam.[5]

An editorial inThe Assam Tribune called him "a versatile scholar and visionary thinker with encyclopedic range."[6] He remainedJawaharlal Nehru Professor atGauhati University and later SaintSankaradeva Professor atPunjabi University.

He was awarded thePadma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 1974,[7] also in the same year he remained the President ofAsam Sahitya Sabha (Assam Literary Society).[8] In 1994, he was awarded theSangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship the highest honour conferred bySangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama.[9]
