Mahabaleshwar Sail (born 4 August 1943)[1] is an Indian author.He has been honoured with theSaraswati Samman, 2016 for his novel 'Hawthan' (हावटण).[2][3]
Mahabaleshwar Sail was born on 4 August 1943 in Shejebag,Majali, Karnataka village ofUttara Kannada district ofKarnataka. He was born in a family of agriculturalists. Sail's father was in the Army. Due to his father's demise, Sail had to leave schooling during his childhood and engage in agriculture. He started school at the age of six and dropped out in the eighth standard.[4] Subsequently, he enrolled himself in theIndian Army. Sail also participated in theIndo-Pakistani War of 1965[5] and was stationed at theHussainiwala border.[6]
He also served as aUnited Nations peacekeeper between 1964–1965 at the border betweenIsrael andEgypt.[5] Sail has worked as a supervisor in the Forest Department. He was also in the Goa, Daman and Diu Police. Sail worked inIndia Post till his retirement.[4][7]
Sail initially wrote inMarathi language but later started writing inKonkani language too.[8] His first story appeared inPralhad Keshav Atre'sSāptāhik Navyug weekly.[5] The first story which he wrote was during a lull in the battle after theTashkent Declaration.[4]
Sail has written stories, novels and children's literature inKonkani language. He has authored novels, stories and plays inMarathi language.[8] His first Konkani novel wasKaali Ganga(काळी गंगा) in 1996.[5] It dealt with the lives of the farming communities on the banks of theKali River (Karnataka) inKarwar.[4] Sail received theSahitya Akadami Award inKonkani language for his short story collectionTaranga(तरंगा) in 1993.[4]
He has authored two novellas,Adrusht(अदृष्ट) andAranyakand(अरण्यकांड) inKonkani language.[4]Adrusht(अदृष्ट) was adapted in the form of the critically acclaimedKonkani language filmPaltadacho Munis.[9][4]
Sail's Konkani shorty story collections arePadtadche Taru(पलतडचे तारू), 'Taranga(तरंगा),Baynet Fighting(बायनेट फायटिंग),Nimano Ashwathama(निमाणो अश्वत्थामा) andDon Moolanche Zhaad(दोन मुळांचें झाड).[8] His novels inKonkani language are 'Kaali Ganga(काळी गंगा),Adrusht(अदृष्ट),Aranyakand(अरण्यकांड),Yug Sanvar(युगसांवार),Khol Khol Moolam(खोल खोल मुळा),Vikhar Vilkho(विखार विळखो) andMaati and Malab(माती आनी मळब).[8]
He has to his credit a children's novel namedSaim Dev(सैम देव). His novels inMarathi language areTaandav(तांडव) andBand Darvaja(बंद दरवाजा). Sail has also scripted plays inMarathi language such asNako Jalu Maza Gharta(नको जाळू माझं घरटं),Charitryaheen(चारित्र्याहीन),Sharanaagati(शरणागती) andYaatna Chakra(यातना चक्र).[8]
Sail's writing is characterised by research on the topic and the use ofKonkani language words fromKarwar region. His novels are characterized by the use of strong female heroines and an excellent depiction of the characters.[10]
Sail'sYug Sanvar(युगसांवार) inKonkani language andTaandav(तांडव) inMarathi language are based on theGoa Inquisition.[4] Both the novels were widely discussed and an English translation by Vidya Pai entitledAge of Frenzy was released byHarperCollins India.[11]
His novelVikhar Vilkho(विखार विळखो) is based on the issue of narcotics.[5]Hawthan(हावटण) is based on the challenged faced by the traditional potters due to the diminishing demand for their wares.[5] Sail's writing have been honoured with various awards including the prestigiousSaraswati Samman, 2016.[5]
In addition, Sail has been a member of various government and literary organisations like theSahitya Akademi, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi and the GoaKala Academy.[5] He was the President of theAll India Konkani Parishad in 2005.[5]
