Machiko Ono (尾野 真千子（おの まちこ）,Ono Machiko; born November 4, 1981) is a Japanese actress.

Early life and career

Machiko Ono was born on November 4, 1981, in the small village ofNishiyoshino, Nara (now part ofGojō City), Nara Prefecture.[1] Her family consist of her mother, father, and three older sisters.[2]

Born in a rural area ofNara Prefecture, Ono was spotted by the film directorNaomi Kawase cleaning out the shoe boxes at her junior high school, and cast in the lead role in Kawase'sSuzaku,[3] which earned the filmmaker theCamera d'Or at the 1997Cannes Film Festival.[4] Ono won the best actress award at theSingapore Film Festival for her role.[5] After appearing in films by directors such asShinji Aoyama,Akihiko Shiota,Nobuhiro Yamashita, andIsao Yukisada, Ono again starred in a Kawase film,The Mourning Forest, which won the Grand Prix at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.[6]

Also appearing on television, Ono was selected in an audition of 1850 actresses to play the coveted lead role inNHK'sAsadora entitledCarnation which began broadcasting in October 2011.[7]

Personal life

In July 2015, Ono married an "ordinary man" who was eleven years her senior and was the managing director of the talent agencyLDH after dating for a year.[8] The marriage only lasted two years before divorcing in September 2017, citing "differences in lifestyle and personal values" that arose amidst her busy schedules.[9] In May 2021, she got remarried to a non-celebrity man, who is ten years her senior, again after only dating for a year.[10] The couple resides in the village ofNakijin,Okinawa.[10]
