Machelen (Dutch pronunciation:[ˈmɑxələ(n)]) is amunicipality in theprovince ofFlemish Brabant, in theFlemish region ofBelgium. The municipality comprises the towns ofDiegem and Machelen proper. On 1 January 2006, Machelen had a total population of 12,500. The total area is 11.59 km2 (4.47 sq mi), which gives apopulation density of 1,078/km2 (2,790/sq mi). The official language of Machelen isDutch, as in the rest ofFlanders. A suburb ofBrussels, Machelen directly borders theBrussels-Capital Region, specifically theHaren neighbourhood.
A portion ofBrussels Airport is located in Diegem,[2] together with neighbouring town ofZaventem. The municipality contains three major road junctions: the intersection of theBrussels Ring (R0) andA201 serving the airport (labelled Zaventem), the start of theA1 towardsMechelen andAntwerp fed by the ring road, and the first junction on the A1 meeting the N211 feeder road fromVilvoorde, also accessing the airport.Buda railway station (onBelgian railway line 25) serves part of the area, although onlyService S1 stops there, other routes usingVilvoorde railway station further north.

Brussels Airlines has its corporate headquarters in the b.house on the grounds ofBrussels Airport and inDiegem, Machelen.[2][3] Brussels Airlines formed in 2006 as a result of a merger betweenSN Brussels andVirgin Express.[4]
The Europe, Middle East, and Africa operations ofChevron Phillips are based in Stockholm Building in Airport Plaza in Diegem.[5]
