Maabatli (Arabic:معبطلي,romanized: Maabatli orMobetan,Kurdish: Mabeta or Mabata), is a town in northernSyria, administratively part of theAleppo Governorate, located northwest ofAleppo in the center ofAfrin District. Nearby localities includeAfrin to the southeast,Rajo to the northwest andJindires to the south. The town is also the administrative center of the Maabatlinahiyah of theAfrin District with a combined population of 11,741.[1] Previously controlled by theYPG since 2012,Syrian National Army forces occupied the city alongside the Afrin city center on March 18, 2018.[2]

The majority of its inhabitants are ofKurdish ethnicity and are mostlyAlevis.[3][4][5] Some of them come from the 1930sKurdish Alevis who fled the persecution of theTurkish Armed Forces during theDersim massacre and theGrey Wolves during theMaras Massacre, settled in Mabeta.[5]
