MAP kinase-activated protein kinase 5 is anenzyme that inhumans is encoded by theMAPKAPK5gene.[5][6]Theprotein encoded by this gene is a member of theserine/threonine kinase family. Inresponse to cellular stress andproinflammatory cytokines, thiskinase is activated through itsphosphorylation byMAP kinases, includingMAPK1/ERK,MAPK14/p38-alpha, andMAPK11/p38-beta.In vitro, this kinasephosphorylatesheat shock proteinHSP27 at its physiologically relevant sites. Two alternately-spliced transcript variants of this gene encoding distinctisoforms have been reported.[6]
A link betweenAlzheimer's disease and reduced levels of MAPKAPK5 has been proposed.Clinical trials may confirm if this is the case.
