TheM271 is a 3-mile-long (5 km)motorway nearSouthampton inHampshire, England. Construction began in 1973 and it opened in 1975.[1] It provides part of the route toSouthampton Docks from theM27, which in turn makes up another part of the route to the docks from the nearbyM3 Motorway.
The motorway begins atRedbridge nearTotton at agrade separatedroundabout with theA35, heading north, briefly as a dual three-lane motorway. At its first junction, it reduces to two lanes and continues east ofHillyfields. After a further 1 mile (1.6 km) it reaches a junction with the M27 at asignal controlled roundabout. North of the M27 it enters thecountryside and terminates after a further mile of dual two-lane road at another roundabout, this time with theA3057 nearUpton.
In 2019, improvement works to Redbridge Roundabout at the southern end, introduced a dedicated lane to connect the M271 with the A33 towards the docks in a free-flow interchange.[2]
