Márcio Longo de Araújo (born 7 May 1960) is a Brazilian professionalfootballcoach and former player who played as either acentral defender or adefensive midfielder.

Playing career

Born inSão José do Rio Pardo,São Paulo, Márcio Araújo was aSão Paulo youth graduate. Despite making his first team debut in 1978, he only started to feature more regularly in 1983, after a loan toSão Bento.

Ahead of the 1987 season, Márcio Araújo left theTricolor and signed forNoroeste,[1] but moved toPortuguesa in the following year. In 1991, he signed forCoritiba, and after five league matches, he retired.[2]

Coaching career

Shortly after retiring, Márcio Araújo began his coaching career atPonte Preta'sAspirantes (under-23) team.[3] He then returned to São Paulo to manage their under-20 squad, and won the 1993Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, havingRogério Ceni as his first-choice goalkeeper;[4] in that year, he was also head coach of the main squad on some occasions, as the club opted to rest the first team.

In August 1993, Márcio Araújo was head coach ofCorinthians for one match, before the arrival ofMário Sérgio. In 1995, he was named assistant coach atPalmeiras,[5] but was appointed head coach in January 1997 afterVanderlei Luxemburgo moved toSantos.

Márcio Araújo was fired byVerdão on 27 May 1997, after two consecutive defeats to rivals Corinthians and São Paulo.[6] On 1 December, he took overInter de Limeira for the ensuingCampeonato Paulista,[7] and subsequently moved toParaná, helping the latter tonarrowly avoid relegation.

Márcio Araújo left Paraná in the end of the 1998 campaign, but was appointed head coach of the club again in February 1999.[8] He left the club in July, and replacedAbel Braga at the helm ofCoritiba in September.[2]

After leaving Coritiba on 9 December 1999,[9] Márcio Araújo was appointed head coach ofAtlético Mineiro the following 12 February.[10] He resigned in July,[11] and subsequently worked atRio Claro before returning to Palmeiras as a technical coordinator.

In March 2001, Márcio Araújo was named interim head coach ofVerdão, afterMarco Aurélio resigned.[12] He returned to his previous role after the appointment ofCelso Roth, but was again appointed head coach in October after Roth was fired.[13]

Márcio Araújo returned to Rio Claro for the 2002 season, and was in charge ofGuaratinguetá before being presented atFortaleza on 19 August 2003.[14] He was relieved of his duties on 19 December,[15] and spent the 2004 campaign as Marco Aurélio's assistant atCruzeiro.[16]

Márcio Araújo returned to coaching duties on 25 June 2005, after being named head coach ofAvaí.[17] Dismissed on 3 October,[18] he returned to Coritiba late in the month,[19] but was sacked from the latter on 24 February 2006.[20]

On 2 February 2007, Márcio Araújo returned to Rio Claro for a third spell,[21] but left the club to return to Guaratinguetá on 13 March.[22] He won theCampeonato do Interior with the latter side in the2007 Campeonato Paulista, before being named in charge ofGoiás on 20 September.[23]

Dismissed by Goiás on 30 November 2007,[24] Márcio Araújo replacedGelson Silva at the helm ofGrêmio Barueri on 19 February 2008.[25] He opted to leave the club in April,[26] but returned to the club in August.[27] After achieving a first-ever promotion in the2008 Série B, he left the club again after failing to agree new terms.[28]

Márcio Araújo returned toGuará on 1 March 2009,[29] but suffered relegation inthe year'sPaulistão. He took overFigueirense on 29 August,[30] and left on 1 December after failing to achieve promotion.[31]

On 22 December 2009, Márcio Araújo was appointed head coach ofSertãozinho for the2010 Campeonato Paulista,[32] but resigned the following 4 February, after only six matches.[33] On 11 August 2010, he was named at the helm ofBahia,[34] and helped in theirreturn to the top tier after a seven-year absence. Shortly after achieving promotion, he left the club after rejecting a contract renewal.[35]

On 12 September 2011, Márcio Araújo replacedVadão as head coach ofSão Caetano.[36] The following 25 May, he was dismissed by the club.[37]

On 23 February 2015, after nearly three years without a club, Márcio Araújo took overBragantino,[38] but was replaced byVágner Benazzi on 20 March.[39] In 2019, he becameFernando Diniz's assistant at Fluminense,[40] and also worked with Diniz at São Paulo[41] andSantos.[42] On 6 July 2021, he left the latter club after alleging "personal reasons".[43]

After a few years away from football, Araújo was a announced as new coordinator of the São Paulo youth sector in May 2024.[44]
