Lynne Strow Piccolo (born 17 June 1943) is an Americansoprano, particularly associated with thespinto roles of the Italian operatic repertoire.
She pursued her career mainly inEurope and made her mark inVerdi andVerismo operas.
After studies at theHartt College of Music with CantorArthur Koret, she started performing inmezzo-soprano roles. In 1970 she moved toMilan for further studies with retiredtenorCarlo Alfieri.
In 1974 she won the prestigiousRAI-Radiotelevisione italiana International ContestVoci liriche dal mondo.[1] Only a few months earlier she had won the highly competitiveBusseto'sVoci Verdiane International Contest.[2]
Ms. Strow made her operatic debut as soprano in 1975 at theTeatro dei Rinnovati inSiena inIphigenie en Tauride byGluck.[3]Until 1988, when she retired for family reasons, she performed in major Italian, French, German Opera Houses asLodoiska,[4]Maria Stuarda,Norma, Verdi and Verismo heroines.
She appeared at theLudwigsburg Festival,[5] theBudapest Opera House asAida, theGran Teatre del Liceu in 1981 as Elisabetta di Valois, theSalle Pleyel,[6] theVienna State Opera and theArena di Verona,La Scala in 1985 asTurandot, theCovent Garden in 1987 as Norma.
She took part in the European premiere ofJohn La Montaine's song cycle,Songs of the Rose of Sharon, at theTeatro di San Carlo in 1975[7] and in Verdi'sMessa da Requiem commemorating the fortieth anniversary of theInvasion of Poland, inKrakow Cathedral andWarsaw's main square.
Ms. Strow occasionally returned to her home country for performances at theSan Diego Opera asDesdemona in 1976[8] and, in later years, theNew Orleans Opera,[9] theFlorida Grand Opera, with theIndianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
She also appeared asSieglinde,[10] her onlyWagnerian role, and recordedOperas (Leoncavallo'sZaza',Isabeau,Nerone,Amica) andConcerts for RAI,Radio France, Dutch and GermanRundfunks.
She was noteworthy for radiance of sound and propriety of style inOratorios (La Resurrezione,Lazarus ),Cantatas (Apollo e Dafne ), Concert Arias.[11][12]
Strow's voice is rich, warm, intense, yet very sweet,[13] capable of admirable modulations.[14]
