Luis García Plaza (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈlwisɣaɾˈθi.aˈplaθa];[a] born 1 December 1972) is a Spanish former professionalfootballer who played as aright-back or acentral defender, currently amanager.

Playing career

In his career, García never played in higher thanSegunda División B. Born inMadrid, he finished his development atAtlético Madrid[2] and, after three seasons withits reserves, moved toYeclano CF, where he coincided withJosé Luis Oltra andPaulino.[3]

Still in theMadrid community, García then representedRayo Vallecano B, completing his sole season with the club on loan atTalavera CF.[4] He signed forBenidorm CF in summer 1996, spending four years at theAlicante side.[5]

García was forced to retire due to injury in 2000, aged only 27.[6]

Coaching career

García took up coaching in 2001, starting with amateursUD Altea and moving after two years to another club in theValencian Community,Villajoyosa CF of the third tier, remaining the same amount of time there.[7]

In2005–06, after a very brief spell at Altea, García ledVillarreal CF'sreserves[8] to theTercera División championship, but the team failed to gain promotion in the subsequent playoffs. Afterwards, he signed withElche CF inSegunda División – and also in theValencia region – being sacked on 7 January 2007 following a 1–1 home draw againstCádiz CF (the team eventuallyretained their league status).[9]

After one year with former club Benidorm, García was appointed atLevante UD, helping to a return toLa Liga after a three-year absence in hissecond season.[10] In thefollowing campaign he led the side to the 14th place, the home highlights being a 2–0 win over Atlético Madrid[11] and home draws withReal Madrid (0–0)[12] andFC Barcelona (1–1).[13]

On 8 June 2011, García signed for Getafe for three years.[14] He coached the capital outskirts team to the 11th position in hisdebut season,finishing one better the following year.[15]

García was dismissed on 10 March 2014, after Getafe onlycollected four draws in 12 games.[16] In the following two seasons, he worked in theUAE First Division League withBaniyas Club.[17][18]

In June 2017, García was appointed as manager ofChina League One clubBeijing Renhe F.C. on a five-month agreement.[19] He coached the team to promotion back to theSuper League in hisfirst season, collecting 13 wins, two draws and three losses; on 9 November, he extended his contract.[20]

García returned to Villarreal on 10 December 2018, replacing the firedJavier Calleja at the helm of the first team.[21] After only one month in charge, and no league wins, he too was relieved of his duties.[22]

On 9 July 2019, García headed back to Beijing Renhe following the resignation ofAleksandar Stanojević.[23] He left on 18 November following their relegation, having won none and drawn two of 11 games.[24] Before the end of the year, he found a new job atAl-Shabab FC (Riyadh), ninth in theSaudi Professional League.[25]

On 6 August 2020, García replacedRCD Espanyol-boundVicente Moreno atRCD Mallorca in the second division,[26] winning promotion as runners-up in hisdebut campaign.[27] On 22 March 2022, with the club inside the relegation zone, he was dismissed.[28]

García was appointed at second-tierDeportivo Alavés on 23 May 2022, on a one-year contract.[29] He achieved promotion in hisfirst season viathe playoffs,[30] then secured survival thefollowing campaign with four games to spare.[31]

On 2 December 2024, García was relieved of his duties.[32]
