Luciano Canepari (Italian pronunciation:[luˈtʃaːnokaneˈpaːri];[1][2] born 19 January 1947) is an Italian linguist. Canepari was a professor in the Department ofLinguistics at theUniversity of Venice,[timeframe?] where he received his academic training.

He developed aphonetic transcription system calledcanIPA[kaˈniːpa],[3] based on theofficial IPA. ThecanIPA consists of 500 basic, 300 complementary and 200 supplementary symbols, a few of which are encoded inUnicode. It is a work in progress, intended to permit the transcription of all world languages in more exact detail than the official IPA. It has seen little use apart from its inventor[4] or his co-authors.[5]

canIPA

[edit]

Canepari developed a phonetic alphabet calledcanIPA. In the works he has authored, both IPA andcanIPA are shown, with the IPA sometimes labeled asoffIPA (as in "official IPA"). ThecanIPA has many unfamiliar rows and columns not in the IPA. The symbols and classification withincanIPA have been altered multiple times throughout Canepari's work, and a large sum of the symbols have no equivalent in Unicode; they therefore cannot be directly displayed here.
