Lucia Bronzetti (born 10 December 1998) is an Italian professionaltennis player. She has career-highWTA rankings of No. 46 in singles, achieved on 8 April 2024, and No. 170 in doubles. She has played three finals and won one singles title on theWTA Tour, at the2023 Morocco Open, and has also reached nine singles finals on theITF Women's Circuit, of which she won five. Bronzetti was a member of the Italian squad which reaching three finals in a row and won the2024 and the2025 Billie Jean King Cup.

In 2023, as the Italian female number two player, she took part in the first edition of theUnited Cup, reaching the final but losing toMadison Keys in the singles. In 2025, she was also part of theHopman Cup pairing withFlavio Cobolli, defeating France and Croatia to reach the final with Canada and losing toBianca Andreescu.

Early life

Bronzetti was born inRimini and grew up inVerucchio.[1][2] She began playing tennis at the age of 10 at the suggestion of her aunt,[3] and took lessons at the Tennis Club Valmarecchia in Pietracuta.[4] Her cousin, Alberto Bronzetti, is also a tennis player.[5][6]

Her training base is inAnzio.[7][8] She also trains at the Circolo Tennis Viserba, outside of Rimini.[4]

Career

2021: WTA Tour debut and first wins

In May, Bronzetti was awarded a wildcard into the singles qualifying rounds ofItalian Open, but failed to advance to the main draw.[9] She and playing partnerNuria Brancaccio were awarded a wildcard into the doubles main draw, but lost in the first round toCoco Gauff andVeronika Kudermetova.[10]

She made her WTA Tour singles main draw debut in July after qualifying for theLadies Open Lausanne, where she reached the quarterfinals with wins overTess Sugnaux[11] and eighth seedAnna Blinkova.[12] Her run was ended by top seed and eventual championTamara Zidanšek.[13] The following week, she reached her second tour quarterfinal atPalermo with wins over fifth seedViktoriya Tomova[14] andGrace Min,[15] before losing toElena-Gabriela Ruse.[16]

In August, Bronzetti entered the qualifiers for theUS Open, but failed to advance past the first round.[17][18] The next month, she reached the second round of theKarlsruhe Open.[19] Bronzetti qualified for theZavarovalnica Sava Portorož and made it to the quarterfinals with wins over seventh seedRebecca Peterson[20] andBernarda Pera.[21] She lost in the last eight to second seedYulia Putintseva.[22]

2022: Major & WTA 1000 debuts, maiden WTA Tour final

Bronzetti qualified for her first major at the2022 Australian Open defeatingAmandine Hesse,Valeria Savinykh, andNao Hibino.[23] She defeatedVarvara Gracheva in the first round, before losing to world No. 1 and eventual champion,Ashleigh Barty, in the second.[24][25]

In March, she made her WTA 1000 main-draw debut as a lucky loser inMiami, reaching the fourth round with wins overAjla Tomljanović[26] andStefanie Vögele[27] and a walkover fromAnna Kalinskaya, before losing to wildcard playerDaria Saville.[28][29] Following the tournament, she entered the top 100.[30]

Bronzetti made her main-draw debut as a wildcard at theItalian Open, but lost in the first round toCamila Osorio.[31][32] She reached her first WTA semifinal at theMorocco Open with wins over eighth seed Anna Kalinskaya,Clara Burel, and third seedNuria Párrizas Díaz,[33] before losing to compatriot and eventual championMartina Trevisan.[34] She entered the main draws of both theFrench Open andWimbledon, but failed to progress past the first round in both, losing toJelena Ostapenko[35] andAnn Li,[36] respectively.

Bronzetti reached her first WTA Tour final inPalermo with wins overWang Xiyu,[37]Elina Avanesyan,[38] fifth seedCaroline Garcia,[39]andJasmine Paolini,[40] before losing to sixth seedIrina-Camelia Begu in the championship match.[41]

Wins overLily Miyazaki,[42]Priscilla Hon,[43]Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva[44] and fifth seed Rebecca Peterson[45] saw her make it through to the final at theWTA 125Vancouver Open where she lost to qualifierValentini Grammatikopoulou.[46]

2023: First career title

Bronzetti won her first WTA Tour title at theMorocco Open in May, with wins over Rebecca Peterson,[47] eighth seedTatjana Maria,[48] fourth seedAlycia Parks,[49] and second seedSloane Stephens,[50] before defeatingJulia Grabher in the final.[51][52]

The following month, she reached her third final and first on grass at theBad Homburg Open with wins over Julia Grabher,[53] fourth seedMayar Sherif[54] and eighth seed Varvara Gracheva[55] and the withdrawal of world No. 1,Iga Świątek, in the semifinal.[56] Bronzetti lost toKateřina Siniaková in the final[57] but reached a new career-high ranking of No. 47 on 3 July.[58]

In August, Bronzetti reached the third round of theUS Open, defeating 12th seedBarbora Krejčíková[59] andEva Lys,[60] before losing toZheng Qinwen.[61]

During the remainder of the season, she made threeWTA 250 quarterfinals at theGuangzhou Open where she lost toGreet Minnen,[62] theNingbo Open where it wasLinda Fruhvirtová who halted her progress,[63] and theJasmin Open where Jasmine Paolini defeated her.[64]

2024: BJK Cup champion, first WTA 125 title

Having come through qualifying, Bronzetti defeated 10th seedDaria Kasatkina in the first round at theDubai Open in February,[65] before losing her next match toAnastasia Potapova.[66]

The following month at theIndian Wells Open, she recorded wins overMagdalena Fręch[67] and 32nd seedAnhelina Kalinina[68] to reach the third round where she lost to third seed Coco Gauff.[69]

Seeded fourth, Bronzetti failed to defend herMorocco Open title in May, going out in the quarterfinals to eventual championPeyton Stearns, losing seven games in a row from 5–0 ahead in the deciding set.[70]

In July, Bronzetti won the clay-courtWTA 125 Contrexéville Open in France, defeatingMayar Sherif in a final which lasted more than three-and-a-half hours.[71]

Later that month, she represented Italy at theParis Olympics but suffered first round defeats in both the singles and women's doubles.[72][73]

At theUS Open in August, Bronzetti defeatedLulu Sun to reach the second round[74] where she lost to second seedAryna Sabalenka.[75]

Seeded seventh, Bronzetti made it through to the semifinals at theJasmin Open in Monastir in September, with wins overDalma Gálfi,[76]Ann Li[77] and qualifierAntonia Ružić,[78][79] before losing toRebecca Šramková in the last four.[80]

In October, having lost in the final qualifying round, she gained entry to theWuhan Open as a lucky loser, going on to defeatAjla Tomljanović to reach round two,[81] where she lost toWang Xinyu in three sets.[82] The following week, Bronzetti defeatedCristina Bucșa in the first round at theJapan Open,[83] before losing to qualifier and eventual championSuzan Lamens.[84] She continued her good Asian swing form by reaching the semifinals at theGuangzhou Open with straight sets wins over fourth seedElina Avanesyan,[85]Jaqueline Cristian[86] and Wang Xiyu.[87] Bronzetti lost in the last four to qualifierCaroline Dolehide in a deciding set tie-break.[88]

At theBJK Cup finals, Bronzetti defeatedMagda Linette as Italy overcame Poland 2–1 in the semifinals.[89] She then overcameViktória Hrunčáková in the opening singles match of the final as Italy claimed the title with a win over Slovakia.[90][91]

2025: Cluj-Napoca final, second WTA 1000 fourth round

In February, Bronzetti overcame wildcard entrantSimona Halep,[92] third seed Peyton Stearns,[93] seventh seedElisabetta Cocciaretto[94] and fifth seed Kateřina Siniaková[95] to reach the final at theTransylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, which she lost to top seed Anastasia Potapova.[96] As a result, she jumped 16 places in the WTA rankings to world No. 56 on 10 February 2025.[97]

The following month at the WTA 1000 event inIndian Wells, she defeated Anhelina Kalinina[98] and 30th seedMagdalena Fręch[99] to make it through to the third round, at which point she lost to world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka.[100]

AtWimbledon, Bronzetti overcameJil Teichmann for her first win at the grass-court major,[101] before losing to seventh seedMirra Andreeva in the second round.[102]

In August at theCincinnati Open, wins overZhu Lin,[103] 15th seedDaria Kasatkina[104] and 23rd seedJeļena Ostapenko saw Bronzetti reach the fourth round of a WTA 1000 event for just the second time.[105] She lost to second seed Coco Gauff in straight sets.[106]
