Louis Negin (20 October 1929 – 2 December 2022) was a British-born Canadian actor, best known for his roles in the films ofGuy Maddin.[1]
Born inLondon, England, and raised inToronto,Ontario, Negin had his earliest film and television roles in the 1950s Canadian dramatic anthology seriesFirst Performance, and as a chorus member inTyrone Guthrie's 1957 film of theStratford Festival production ofOedipus Rex. He appeared in the Stratford Festival production ofTamburlaine, which had a run onBroadway in 1956,[2] and later appeared in London productions ofFortune and Men's Eyes and his own playLove and Maple Syrup; inFortune and Men's Eyes, he became one of the first actors ever to appear fully nude on stage in England.[2]
Negin later appeared in films includingThe Ernie Game,Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?,Ooh… You Are Awful,Barry McKenzie Holds His Own,Rabid,Two Solitudes andHighpoint. As well as appearing in TV series such asBrett,Mousey andThe Zoo Gang and episodes ofKing of Kensington andThe Littlest Hobo. In the 1980s he had a recurring role onSeeing Things, as well as acting in the television filmsOverdrawn at the Memory Bank,Freddie the Freeloader's Christmas Dinner andCharlie Grant's War.
In 1994, he acted indrag as Mrs. White in a Toronto production of John Wimbs andChristopher Richards' playMolly Wood.[3] In 1998, he playedNoël Coward in a production ofLinda Griffiths' playThe Duchess atTheatre Passe Muraille.[2] He playedTruman Capote, both in a Toronto stage production of the playTru in 1996[4] and in the film54.[1]
In later years, he acted in several of Guy Maddin's films, includingCowards Bend the Knee,Sissy Boy Slap Party,The Saddest Music in the World,Keyhole, andThe Forbidden Room as well as narrating Maddin's semi-documentary filmsBrand Upon the Brain! andMy Winnipeg.[1] He also had guest roles in the television seriesLord Have Mercy!,Mona the Vampire,ReGenesis andSlings and Arrows, and inBruce McDonald's filmPontypool.
In 2008, he performedThe Glass Eye, a semi-autobiographical play which he wrote in collaboration withMarie Brassard, inMontreal and Toronto.[2]
In 2019, he appeared inMatthew Rankin's filmThe Twentieth Century, acting in drag as the mother of Prime MinisterMackenzie King.[5] He received aVancouver Film Critics Circle award nomination forBest Supporting Actor in a Canadian Film.[6]
Negin, who was gay, was the partner of former television and film designer Charles Dunlop.[1] In a 2007 interview withXtra!, Negin described his age as "Write that I'm 95 years old, and that I've been to Hungary to have some work done."[7]
Guy Maddin announced Negin's death on hisInstagram on December 3, 2022.[8] Negin had died the previous day, inMontreal, at the age of 93.[9]
