Louis McCartney is an Irish actor. He is best known for originating the role ofHenry Creel in the originalWest End andBroadway stage productions ofStranger Things: The First Shadow, which earned him a nomination for theTony Award for Best Lead Actor in a Play.[1]

Early life and education

FromBelfast,[2] he is the son of screenwriter Michael McCartney. His mother is a holistic therapist. He has an older brother who works as an ocean explorer.[3] He studied acting atBow Street Academy,Dublin.[4]

Career

In 2022, McCartney appeared inComedy Blaps episodeWilliam of Orangedale onChannel 4.[5] He had small roles inThe Tourist andGame of Thrones. He had a recurring role as Shay O’Hare in Northern Ireland crime drama seriesHope Street.[6]

McCartney could be seen in the lead role in 2023 British filmSilent Roar.[7][8] His performance was described byPeter Bradshaw inThe Guardian as “intelligent and sympathetic”.[9]

In December 2023, he made his LondonWest End theatre debut inStranger Things: The First Shadow playingHenry Creel.[10] 20 years old at the start of the run, he had never been in a West End Theatre prior to his casting.[11] David Benedict inVariety said the success of the play "is due in no small part to the way [McCartney] holds focus even in the midst of one coup-de-theatre after another".[12] He won Best Performer in a Play at The Stage Debut Awards in 2024.[13]He reprised the role when the play transferred toBroadway in the United States, appearing from April 2025, at theMarquis Theatre in New York, where he received multiple award nominations for his performance including theTony Award for Best Actor in a Play.[14][15]
