TheLotidae are a family ofcod-like fishes commonly known ashakes orburbots.[1] They are found in theArctic andAtlantic Oceans, and some freshwater habitats throughout the temperateNorthern Hemisphere. All species are marine, except for theburbot,Lota lota, found in rivers and lakes in northern Europe,Siberia, and North America. They are important commercial and game fish species.[2]
Members of theGaidropsaridae were previously also placed in this family.[3][4]
The fossil genus †PalaeomolvaDaniltshenko, 1947 is known from theMiocene.[5]
