Lorenzo Pellegrini (Italian pronunciation:[loˈrɛntsopelleˈɡriːni];[3][4] born 19 June 1996) is an Italian professionalfootballer who plays as anattacking midfielder forSerie A clubRoma and theItaly national team.

Pellegrini is an academy graduate of Roma, having joined the club in 2007, and made his senior debut in 2015. He departed forSassuolo later that year, where he made over fifty appearances across all competitions, before returning to Roma in July 2017.

Club career

[edit]

Roma

[edit]

Born inRome, Pellegrini, who had suffered fromarrhythmia as a youngster, joined the youth academy of local sideRoma at the age of nine.[5][6][7] Having previously represented the club in theUEFA Youth League, he was handed his senior debut at the age of 18 bymanagerRudi Garcia on 22 March 2015, coming on as a second-halfsubstitute forSalih Uçan in a 1–0Serie A victory againstCesena.[6][8]

Sassuolo

[edit]

On 30 June 2015, Pellegrinisigned for fellow Serie A sideSassuolo for a fee of €1.25 million.[9] In terms of the transfer agreement, Roma retained a buy-back-clause which afforded the club the opportunity to re-purchase Pellegrini at a future stage.[10][11] Pellegrini made his debut for the club on 8 November 2015, starting in a 1–0 league victory againstCarpi,[12] and scored his first goal the following month when he netted in a 3–0 victory againstSampdoria.[13] He eventually made 20 appearances for the season, including one in theCoppa Italia, and scored three goals. During the2016–17 season, Pellegrini became the youngest player to have a hand in ten goals in one Serie A campaign, having registered six goals and four assists by 10 April 2017.[14] He made 34 appearances across all competitions for the campaign, scoring eight goals registering seven assists, before re-signing for Roma at the end of the season.[15]

Return to Roma

On 30 June 2017, Roma exercised the buyback clause of €10 million, which was included in Pellegrini'stransfer agreement with Sassuolo, to bring him back to Rome on a five-year deal.[15][16] On the same day Roma youth productFederico Ricci joined Sassuolo outright,[16] for a €3 million fee.[17] Pellegrini scored his first-ever goal for the club on 1 December 2017, netting Roma's third goal in a 3–1 league victory againstSPAL.[18]

On 25 May 2022, Pellegrini captained A.S. Roma in the inauguralEuropa Conference League final, which his team won 1–0 againstFeyenoord.[19] He was also named Player of the Season in that competition.[20] On 31 May 2023, he captained his team in theEuropa League final which they lost 4–1 on penalties againstSevilla following a 1–1 draw after extra time.[21]

International career

[edit]

Having represented various Italian youth teams, Pellegrini debuted for thesenior squad on 11 June 2017 in a 5–0 home victory againstLiechtenstein of a2018 World Cup qualification.[22] Later that month, Pellegrini was included in the Italy under-21 squad for the2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship by managerLuigi Di Biagio.[23] One 18 June, he scored his first youth goal at the tournament, netting from abicycle kick in a 2–0 victory againstDenmark.[24][25] Italy was eliminated in the semi-finals after a 3–1 defeat againstSpain on 27 June. During the match, Pellegrini assistedFederico Bernardeschi's temporary equaliser.[26] Two years after his promotion in the senior team, Pellegrini was called back in the U21 squad for the2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship on home soil.[27] Pellegrini scored his first goal with the Italy senior side on 5 September 2019, in a 3–1 away victory againstArmenia in aEuro 2020 qualifier.[28]

In June 2021, Pellegrini was included in Italy's squad forUEFA Euro 2020 by managerRoberto Mancini.[29] However, an injury ruled him out of the final tournament, andGaetano Castrovilli was called up in his place.[30] On 6 October, Pellegrini scored in a 2–1 home defeat againstSpain in the semi-finals of the2021 UEFA Nations League Finals.[31]

In June 2024, Pellegrini was included by managerLuciano Spalletti in Italy's squad forUEFA Euro 2024,[32] and was later assigned thenumber ten shirt.[33] In June 2024, Bastoni was included in Italy's final squad forUEFA Euro 2024 by managerLuciano Spalletti.[34] On 15 June, in Italy's opening group match of the tournament againstAlbania, he set upAlessandro Bastoni's temporary equaliser as Italy came from behind to win the match 2–1.[35] Italy was eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16 following a 2–0 loss againstSwitzerland.[36]

Style of play

[edit]

Regarded as a promising young player, from a tactical standpoint, Pellegrini's natural role is that of acentral midfielder, who can be deployed in any position in a three-man midfield, although he is also capable of playing as anattacking midfielder and as adefensive midfielder. A tall, physically strong, yet agile, dynamic, energetic, and hard-working midfielder, his main characteristics are his stamina, ball control, movement, flair, and ability to make attacking runs into the penalty area from behind, as well as his eye for goal, and his striking ability from distance with either foot, despite being naturally right-footed. A formercentral defender in his youth, he is also an effective ball-winner, which enables him to break down possession, while his vision and technical skills allow him subsequently to carry or distribute the ball and provide assists for his teammates. His wide range of skills thus enable him to contribute at both ends of the pitch, and make him effective in linking both the defensive and offensive aspects of the game in abox-to-box role.[5][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44]

Personal life

[edit]

Pellegrini is married toVeronica Martinelli, with whom he has three children together.[45]
