Lophospiza is a genus of Asianbirds of prey in the familyAccipitridae. It is the only genus in thesubfamilyLophospizinae. The two species placed in this genus were formerly placed in the genusAccipiter.
The genusLophospiza was introduced in 1844 by the German naturalistJohann Jakob Kaup withFalco trivirgatusTemminck as thetype species.[1] The name combines theAncient Greek λοφος (lophos) meaning "crest" and σπιζιας (spizias) meaning "hawk".[2]
The genus contains two species:[3]
Both species were formerly classified in the genusAccipiter butmolecular phylogenetic studies found thatAccipiter waspolyphyletic.[4][5] In the rearrangement to createmonophyletic genera these two species were moved to the resurrected genusLophospiza.[3][6]
