Lobster Lake in theNorth Maine Woods was named because its shape resembles the outline of a lobster claw. The larger eastern arm of the lake extending southward isBig Claw and a smaller western arm isLittle Claw. Lobster Stream connects the northwest corner of the lake to theWest Branch Penobscot River 1.4 miles (2.3 km) north of the lake.[2] Lobster Lake and the river are at a similar elevation; so the West Branch may temporarily reverse flow through Lobster Stream into the lake during peak runoff events from the westernMaine highlands along theCanadian border. The lake has self-sustaining populations of nativelake trout and land-lockedAtlantic salmon; butbrook trout populations are suppressed by competition fromyellow perch andwhite perch.[4]
