Loasaceae is afamily of 15–20 genera and about 200–260 species offlowering plants in the orderCornales, native to theAmericas andAfrica. Members of the family includeannual,biennial andperennialherbaceous plants, and a fewshrubs and smalltrees. Members of thesubfamily Loasoideae are known to exhibit rapidthigmonastic stamen movement when pollinators are present.[2]
In the classification system ofDahlgren the Loasaceae were placed in the order Loasales in thesuperorder Loasiflorae (also called Loasanae). TheAngiosperm Phylogeny Group system places them in the related orderCornales in theasteridclade.[3]
