lm_sensors (Linux-monitoring sensors) is afreeopen-source software-tool forLinux that provides tools and drivers for monitoringtemperatures, voltage, humidity, andfans. It can also detect chassis intrusions.[citation needed]
During 2001/2004, the lm_sensors package was not recommended for use on IBMThinkPads due to potentialEEPROM corruption issues on some models when aggressively probing forI2C devices.[2][3][4] This has since been dealt with, and the separateREADME file dedicated to ThinkPads was removed in 2007.[5]
In 2013, thesensors-detect
command of lm-sensors began disrupting thegamma correction settings of some laptop display screens. This occurs while it is probing theI2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware monitoring devices. Probing of these devices was disabled by default.[6][better source needed][7][8][9]
lm-sensors should now be safe to use on Thinkpad laptops. Jean Delvare committed on 24 Sep 2007
