
Irwin Lloyd EslerQSM (born 1957) is a New Zealandnatural history teacher, columnist, and formerInvercargill City Councillor.
After studying botany at theUniversity of Otago and education atOtago Polytechnic, Esler worked at theOtago Museum from 1978 to 1986. He then taught at theSouthland Museum and Art Gallery from 1991 to 2001.[1]
Esler unsuccessfully ran for Invercargill City Council in 1992, garnering only 3,641 votes and coming 26th.[2] He made it onto the council in 2010 and rose up the ranks with each subsequent election, being the second highest polling councillor in 2016.[3][4][5] Esler did not run for re-election in 2019, instead running for theEnvironment Southland council[6] and topping the poll.[7] He did not run for re-election in 2022.[8]
Esler has written a weekly historycolumn forThe Southland Times since 2002.[9]
Esler was awarded theQueen's Service Medal in the2009 New Year Honours for services to the community.[1]
