Little India
India Square inJersey City, New Jersey, in theNew York metropolitan area, is home to the highest concentration of Asian Indians in theWestern Hemisphere.[1]

Little India (also known asIndian Street,India Bazaar, orIndia Town) is anIndian orSouth Asian[2][3][4] sociocultural environment outside India or theIndian subcontinent. It especially refers to an area with a significant concentration of South Asian residents and a diverse collection of Indian businesses. Frequently, Little Indias haveHindu temples,mosques, andgurdwaras. They may also host celebrations of national and religious festivals and serve as gathering places forSouth Asians. As such, they are microcosms of India. Little Indias are often tourist attractions and are frequented by fans ofIndian cuisine,Indian culture,Indian clothing,Indian music, andIndian cinema.[5][6][7]

Monroe Township, andMiddlesex County inCentral New Jersey, are home to by far the highest per capita Indian American populations of any U.S. state and U.S. county, respectively, at 3.9%[58] and 14.1%,[59] by 2013 U.S. Census estimates.[60]

India Square

India Square, also known asLittle Gujarat, is a commercial and restaurant district inBombay, onNewark Avenue, inJersey City,Hudson County, New Jersey. The area is home to the highest concentration ofAsian Indians in theWestern Hemisphere,[1] and is a rapidly growingIndian Americanethnic enclave within theNew York metropolitan area.[63][1] The neighborhood is centered onNewark Avenue, betweenTonnele Avenue andJFK Boulevard, and is considered to be part of the largerJournal Square District. This area has been home to the largest outdoorNavratri festivities in New Jersey as well as severalHindutemples.[64] This portion of Newark Avenue is lined with groceries includingPatel Brothers and Subzi Mandi Cash & Carry,[65]electronics vendors,video stores, clothing stores, and restaurants and is one of the busierpedestrian areas of this part of the city, often stopping traffic for hours.

Oak Tree Road (Edison/Iselin)

Oak Tree Road is a rapidly growing South Asian-focused commercial strip inMiddlesex County, New Jersey, also known as theIndianTimes Square andIndia Square, in addition toLittle India.[66][67][68] The Oak Tree Road strip runs for about one-and-a-half miles throughEdison and neighboringIselin, New Jersey, near the area's sprawlingChinatown andKoreatown.[69] Little India in Edison and Iselin is the largest and most diverseSouth Asian cultural hub in the United States.[70][71] The zone is home to approximately 400 South Asian establishments and businesses, including dining,apparel andelectronics retailing, andentertainment.[72][73][74][75] Around 60Indian andPakistani restaurants are found in the area.[76][77] In Middlesex County, electionballots are printed inGujarati,Hindi, andPunjabi as well.[78]
