India has28 states and eight union territories, which are divided into divisions comprising several districts.Subdistricts are most commonly referred to astehsils, which comes under asub-division of a district. The current terms have replaced earliergeographical terms, such aspargana andthana.[1]
Most subdistricts in India correspond to an area within adistrict including the designatedcity,town,hamlet, or otherpopulated place that serves as its administrative centre, with possible additionaltowns, and usually a number ofvillages.[2]
In the Indian administrative context, states adopt various nomenclatures for their sub-district divisions, includingTehsil, Taluk, Circle, Subdivision, and Mandal. Notably,Tehsil predominates inNorth Indian states, whereasTaluk is prevalent inSouth Indian states. These delineations exist beneath the level ofrevenue division/sub-division within the administrative framework of adistrict. Each sub-district is headed by atehsildar/mamlatdar/mandal revenue officer.
