This is a list of thepresidents ofMontenegro, including theheads of state of theSocialist Republic of Montenegro, aconstituent country of theSocialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and heads of state of theRepublic of Montenegro (1992–2006), a constituent country of theFederal Republic of Yugoslavia / State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Prior to 1974,Montenegro's head of state was thespeaker(president) of the Montenegrin parliament.
The President (Predsjednik) is directly elected to a five-year term and is limited by theConstitution to a maximum of two terms. In addition to being theCommander-in-chief of theArmed Forces, the President has the procedural duty of appointing thePrime Minister with the consent of theParliament, and has some influence on foreign policy. The President's office is located in theBlue Palace, in the former royal capitalCetinje.
