Yahoo! Inc. is acomputer software andweb search engine company founded on March 1, 1995.[1] The company is apublic corporation and its headquarters is located inSunnyvale, California.[2] It was founded byStanford University graduate studentsJerry Yang andDavid Filo in 1994.[3] According to webtraffic analysis companies, Yahoo has been one of the most visited websites on the Internet, with more than 130 millionunique users per month in the United States alone.[4][5][6]

Yahoo's first acquisition was the purchase ofNet Controls, aweb search engine company, in September 1997 for US$1.4 million. As of April 2008, the company's largest acquisition is the purchase ofBroadcast.com, anInternet radio company, for $5.7 billion, making Broadcast.com co-founderMark Cuban a billionaire. Most of the companies acquired by Yahoo are based in the United States; 78 of the companies are from the United States, and 15 are based in a foreign country. As of July 2015, the first incarnation of Yahoo had acquired 114 companies, withPolyvore being the latest.

In 2017, the first incarnation Yahoo! Inc. was purchased byVerizon Communications and merged withAOL. In May 2021, Verizon sold a majority stake in the combined company, then called Verizon Media, toApollo Global Management, who restored the Yahoo! name.
