This is a list ofearthquakes in 2000. Onlyearthquakes of magnitude 6 or above are included, unless they result in significant damage and/or casualties. All dates are listed according toUTC time. The maximum intensities are based on theModified Mercalli intensity scale. Earthquake magnitudes are based on data from theUSGS and theISC. Fifteen earthquakes ≥M7 occurred within the year, along with one ≥M8 event.

In a busy year with 16 major quakes, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia were hit particularly hard, with 7 of the 16 major quakes striking both countries; the largest earthquake of the year, measuring Mw  8.0–8.2, struck Papua New Guinea'sBismarck Archipelago, while the year's deadliest earthquake, a Mw  7.9 event, killed 141 people in Indonesia'sBengkulu province. The total death toll for earthquakes in 2000 was 227, much lower than previous and later years. Other notable and deadly earthquakes occurred in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, China, Turkey and Nicaragua.

Note that an increase in detected earthquake numbers does not necessarily represent an increase in earthquakesper se. Population increase, habitation spread, and advances in earthquake detection technology all contribute to higher earthquake numbers being recorded over time.USGS's Website has more information.
