
Macau is anautonomous territory on the western side of thePearl River Delta inEast Asia. With a population of 650,900[1] living in an area of 30.5 km2 (11.8 sq mi), it is the mostdensely populated region in the world.
Macau is among the world's richest regions, and as of 2015[update] itsGDP per capita by purchasing power parity is higher than that of any country in the world, according to theWorld Bank.[2] It became the world's largest gambling centre in 2006,[3] with the economy heavily dependent ongambling and tourism, as well as manufacturing. According toThe World Factbook, Macau has the fourth highestlife expectancy in the world.[4] Moreover, it is one of the regions in Asia with a "very highHuman Development Index", ranking 18th in the world as of 2014[update].[5]
