Italy is aunitaryparliamentary republic in Europe with the third largest nominalGDP in theEurozone and the eighthlargest in the world. As an advanced economy, the country also has the sixth worldwidenational wealth and it is ranked third for its central bankgold reserve. Italy has a very high level ofhuman development and it is sixth in the world forlife expectancy.
The country plays a prominent role in regional and global economic, military, cultural and diplomatic affairs, and it is both aregional power[2][3] and agreat power.[4][5] Italy is afounding andleading member of theEuropean Union and a member of numerous international institutions, including theUN,NATO, theOECD, theOSCE, theWTO, theG7,G20, theUnion for the Mediterranean, theCouncil of Europe,Uniting for Consensus andmany more. As a reflection of its cultural wealth, Italy is home to 54World Heritage Sites, the most in the world, and is the fifthmost visited country.
