
This is a list ofcities and towns inGreenland as of 1 July 2025[update].[1] In Greenland, two kinds of settled areas are distinguished:illoqarfik (Greenlandic for 'town';by in Danish) andnunaqarfik (Greenlandic for 'settlement';bygd in Danish). The difference between the two decreased since thenew administrative units were introduced in 2009, with the influence of previous municipality centres decreasing. Traditionally, the seat of each municipality was considered aby, whereas every other settlement in a municipality was abygd. Abygd could have anything from one to about five hundred inhabitants. Many places haveDanish names in addition to theGreenlandic names. The Danish name, when applicable, is shown.
As of 1 July 2025[update] the resident population of Greenland was estimated at 56,831.[2]
As of 1 July 2025, there are 12 towns in Greenland with a population exceeding 1,000, 14 towns and settlements with a population between 200 and 1,000, 15 settlements with a population between 100 and 200, and 30 settlements with a population below 100.[3][4][5]
