Sherlock is a Britishmystery andcrime television series based onSir Arthur Conan Doyle'sSherlock Holmes detective novels and stories.[1] It was created bySteven Moffat andMark Gatiss, and starsBenedict Cumberbatch asSherlock Holmes andMartin Freeman asDoctor John Watson.[2]Sherlock consists ofthirteen episodes that were produced as four three-part series airing from 2010 to 2017 and a special episode, "The Abominable Bride", that aired on 1 January 2016.[3][4]

Set in modern-day London,Sherlock depicts Holmes assisting theMetropolitan Police Service in solving various mysteries. He is assisted by Watson, who has returned frommilitary service in Afghanistan with theRoyal Army Medical Corps.[5] The series also features Holmes'sarchenemy,Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott),[2] as well as his brother,Mycroft Holmes (Gatiss).[6]Amanda Abbington appears as Watson's wife,Mary Morstan, whileUna Stubbs playsMrs Hudson, Holmes'slandlady.[7] The series also showcasesDetective Inspector Greg Lestrade (Rupert Graves), aScotland Yard detective and one of Holmes's best friends,[8][9] andIrene Adler (Lara Pulver), adominatrix who exchangesstate secrets with Moriarty.[7]

Sherlock was met with critical acclaim and received numerous accolades.[1][10][11] It won thePeabody Award in 2011 for "A Study in Pink". The series garnered forty-seven nominations from theBritish Academy of Film and Television Arts, including fourBAFTA TV wins:Best Drama Series,Best Supporting Actor (Freeman and Scott), and theAudience Award.Sherlock received thirty-ninePrimetime Emmy nominations (with nine wins), including a win forOutstanding Television Movie (for "The Abominable Bride"). Cumberbatch and Freeman both won Emmys for their performances, as did Moffat for his screenwriting. The series garnered several other nominations, including twelveCrime Thriller Awards (six wins), nineCritics' Choice Television Awards (two wins), and threeEdgar Allan Poe Awards (one win). Cumberbatch also received a nomination for theGolden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.
