Anairport is anaerodrome with facilities for flights to take off and land. Airports often have facilities to store and maintain aircraft, and acontrol tower. An airport consists of alanding area, which comprises an aerially accessible open space including at least one operationally active surface such as arunway for a plane to take off or ahelipad, and often includes adjacent utility buildings such as control towers,hangars andterminals.
An airport with a helipad for rotorcraft but no runway is called aheliport. An airport for use byseaplanes andamphibious aircraft is called aseaplane base. Such a base typically includes a stretch of open water fortakeoffs andlandings, andseaplane docks for tying-up. Aninternational airport has additional facilities forcustoms andimmigration.
