TheOne Piece video games are based onEiichiro Oda'smanga andanime seriesof the same name. Most games are published byBandai Namco Entertainment, formerlyBandai andBanpresto. The games take place in the fictional world ofOne Piece, and the stories revolve around the adventures ofMonkey D. Luffy and hisStraw Hat Pirates, the franchise's protagonists.

Games have been released for many homevideo game consoles, handheld game consoles, and mobile phones. The series features various genres, mostlyrole-playing games (the predominant type in the series' early years) andfighting games, such as the games in theGrand Battle! sub-series. The series contains 56 games including 11 mobile games, not counting appearances in crossover entries.

Overview

[edit]

The video game series debuted in Japan on July 19, 2000, withFrom TV Animation – One Piece: Become the Pirate King! (One Piece: Mezase Kaizoku Ou!) for the BandaiWonderSwan Color handheld game console.[1] More than five years after the video game series debuted in Japan,One Piece: Grand Battle! Rush was the firstOne Piece video game to be localized and released in North America, on September 7, 2005, forNintendoGameCube.[2] Out of 38 games (not including non-Japanese games), 11 have been released in North America, two in Australia, and 13 in Europe.

Japan's large demand for such games leads its companies to produce the games with haste and thus low regard for quality.[3] In contrast, theOne Piece video game, which was produced for and exclusively released to the North American markets, was crowned "GBA Platformer of the Year" in 2005 byGameSpy's network of game websites.[3]
