List of Copa Libertadores winning managers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is alist of Copa Libertadores winning football managers.UruguayanmanagerRoberto Scarone ledPeñarol to success in the inauguralCopa Libertadores finals in1960 and repeated the feat the following season.Argentine clubs and managers dominated the competition in the late 1960s and 1970s, winning 12 out of 15 tournaments from1964 to1978. In the 1990sBrazilian clubs and managers dominated the competition with six wins from 1992 to 1999, after which the second period of Argentine dominance began, with seven wins in the period from2000 to2009.

As of the most recent2024 final, Argentine managers have been the most successful, winning 27 out of 65 tournaments held, followed by Brazilians with 20 wins and Uruguayans with 10 titles. On only nine occasions the tournament was won by foreign managers: then-Yugoslav coachMirko Jozić ledChilean sideColo-Colo to victory in 1991, and ArgentineEdgardo Bauza won the tournament withEcuadorian clubLDU Quito. All three wins byParaguayan sideOlimpia came under foreign managers: UruguayanLuis Cubilla led them to victory in 1979 and 1990, and ArgentineNery Pumpido in2002.Portuguese managersJorge Jesus,Abel Ferreira, andArtur Jorge won the title withBrazilian sidesFlamengo,Palmeiras, andBotafogo respectively. Jesus won it in2019, Ferreira in2020 and2021, and Artur Jorge in2024. Jozić, Jesus, Ferreira, and Artur Jorge are also the only managers from outsideSouth America to have won the competition.

The most successful individual manager is ArgentineCarlos Bianchi who won the tournament on four occasions, leadingVélez Sársfield to success in1994, and then againBoca Juniors in2000,2001 and2003. He is followed by fellow ArgentineOsvaldo Zubeldía with three consecutive wins in 1968, 1969 and 1970 (all withEstudiantes), while twelve other managers won the tournament twice.

Along with Carlos Bianchi, only three other managers have won the title with more than one club: BraziliansPaulo Autuori (withCruzeiro in1997 andSão Paulo in2005),Luiz Felipe Scolari (withGrêmio in1995 andPalmeiras in1999), and ArgentineEdgardo Bauza (withLDU Quito in2008 andSan Lorenzo in2014). Bauza is also the only manager to have won the competition with two clubs from different countries.

The data below does not include the 1948South American Championship of Champions, as it is not listed byCONMEBOL either as a Copa Libertadores edition or as an official competition. However, at least in the years 1996 and 1997,CONMEBOL entitled equal status to both Copa Libertadores and the 1948 tournament, in that the 1948 champion club (CR Vasco da Gama) was allowed to participate inSupercopa Libertadores, aCONMEBOL official competition that allowed participation for former Libertadores champions only (for example, not admitting participation for champions of otherCONMEBOL official competitions, such asCopa CONMEBOL).
