Lisa Ryder (born 26 October 1970)[3] is aCanadian actress, who portrayed the role ofBeka Valentine on the science fiction television seriesAndromeda.[4]

Life and career

Ryder was born inEdmonton,Alberta[3] and attended theUniversity of Toronto,[2] where she began acting. She formed a local theatre group, Bald Ego Productions, inToronto[5] after graduation[2] and landed her first film and television roles in the mid-1990s. She starred in many theatre productions, including "Put Me Away," a one-woman show which she wrote.[5] She gained a following as Detective Tracy Vetter on the final season of the vampire dramaForever Knight[6] in 1995–1996 and was cast on the syndicated science-fiction seriesAndromeda in 2000; the series ended in 2005 after 110 episodes. She also co-starred, as android Kay-Em 14, in the 2001 filmJason X,[7][8] starring AndromedaalumnusLexa Doig (notable is the role reversal).

Ryder guest-starred inGene Roddenberry'sEarth: Final Conflict,[2]Total Recall 2070,Kung Fu: The Legend Continues,Wind at My Back andPsi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal. She also had a recurring role onThe Newsroom. Her other movie roles include the critically acclaimedCanadian indie filmStolen Heart,[9] the thrillerBlackheart[10] and the short filmsStrands andLemon. She also wrote, produced and starred in the filmSF Seeks, featuringMichael Shanks,Gordon Michael Woolvett,Keith Hamilton Cobb andLexa Doig.[citation needed] She appeared in a television advert for Cheer laundry detergent in the late 80s – early 90s.

In 2014, Ryder starred in theCanadian Stage co-production ofHelen Lawrence.[2][11] In 2019, Ryder's playA Blow in the Face premiered withNightwood Theatre and Bald Ego Theatre in Toronto, Ontario.[5][12] The play was inspired by her personal experiences withpostpartum depression after the birth of her first child.[13] In the premiere, Ryder played the roofer Cloudy.[14]
