Linnusitamaa (also known asLinnusita saar) is a 5.07 ha (12.5-acre)[1] uninhabitedEstonian islet in theGulf of Riga. It is located about 300 m (980 ft) south of the island ofAbruka. Administratively Linnusitamaa belongs to the village ofAbruka inSaaremaa Parish,Saare County. The island is part of theAbruka Nature Reserve.
The name is a curiosity, literally meaning 'bird shit land' inEstonian. However, as the Estonian word does not have as offensive connotations as theEnglish equivalent, it would more properly be translated as 'guano island'.[2]
TheNew York Times reported that, during the1905 Russian Revolution against Czarist Russia, Linnusitamaa, like other Baltic islands, declared itself an independent republic.[3]
