Lincoln David Stein is a scientist andProfessor inbioinformatics andcomputational biology at theOntario Institute for Cancer Research.[2][4][5]

Education

[edit]

Stein completed aDoctor of Medicine atHarvard Medical School and aPhD inCell Biology atHarvard University both in 1989[6] via theMD-PhD program. His thesis investigatedgene cloning inSchistosoma mansoni.[6]

Career

[edit]

From 1992-1997 he was a director of informatics at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Genome Centre,Whitehead Institute of Biomedical Research. From 1998 to 2004 he was anassociate professor atCold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He has been working at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research since 2007.[citation needed]

Research

[edit]

Stein's current research projects[2][5] includeReactome,[7]WormBase,[7]BioPerl,[8] Gramene,[9]ENCODE,[10][11][12] theGeneric Model Organism Database,[13] theSequence Ontology[14] andCloud computing.[15]

Stein is also the original developer ofCGI.pm and a contributor tomod_perl, both widely used in thePerl programming language for web applications, as well as many otherPerl modules and associated books.[16][17][18][19][20]

Awards and honours

[edit]

Stein was awarded theBenjamin Franklin Award (Bioinformatics) in 2004.[21] He was elected anISCB Fellow in 2016 by theInternational Society for Computational Biology.[1]
