Lieutenant (junior grade) ranks aboveensign and belowlieutenant and is equivalent to afirst lieutenant in the otheruniformed services (theArmy,Marine Corps,Air Force, andSpace Force) andsub-lieutenant in theRoyal Navy[4] and the navies of manyCommonwealth countries.
Promotion to LTJG is governed by Department of Defense policies derived from theDefense Officer Personnel Management Act (DOPMA) of 1980. DOPMA guidelines suggest all "fully qualified"ensigns should be promoted to LTJG. The time for promotion to LTJG is a minimum of two years after commissioning in the Navy[5] or 18 months in the Coast Guard.[6] Lieutenants, junior grade typically leadpetty officers andnon-rated personnel, unless assigned to small aircraft or onstaff duty. A LTJG's usual shipboard billet is as adivision officer.
Lieutenant, junior grade is often referred to colloquially as JG. Prior to March 3, 1883, this rank was known in the U.S. Navy asmaster.[7]

In theUnited States Maritime Services (USMS) - a voluntary training organization of theU.S. Department of Transportation - Lieutenant (junior grade) is the second most junior rank.[8] USMS officers are commissioned into theNaval Reserve after attending theU.S. Merchant Marine Academy[9] or one of the other six maritime academies into the ranks of theU.S. Navy Strategic Sealift Officer Corps.[10] Many US Maritime Services officers serve at the academy or the other six schools as faculty.[11]
