Liaodong Bay is largest and longest of the three mainbays of theBohai Sea, the innermostgulf of theYellow Sea. The other two bays areLaizhou Bay to the south andBohai Bay to the southwest.
Although named after theLiaodong Peninsula (which forms its easternshore), the bay is located directly south of theLiaoxi region, almost entirely west of theLiao River. It is bounded by the coastline of cities from southernLiaoning province (Dalian,Yingkou,Panjin,Jinzhou andHuludao) and easternHebei province (Qinhuangdao andTangshan), between the LaotieshanCape at Dalian'sLüshunkou District in the east, and the Daqing Riverestuary (which is an old southernmouth ofLuan River) at Tangshan'sLaoting County in the west. The bay is a source of ecological importance and exhibits rich biodiversity.[1]
The major rivers that drain into the Liaodong Bay includeLuan River,Daling River, Xiaoling River,Liao River andDaliao River.
The bay can experiencesea ice during the winter, posing difficulties for mariners.[2]
