Generative characteristics

Leptochiton has phytomelanous seeds, which is unique among the tribe Hymenocallideae.[8]

Cytology

The diploid chromosome count is 2n = 24 or 2n = 34.[8]

Taxonomy

It was published byJoseph Robert Sealy in 1937 withLeptochiton quitoensis(Herb.) Sealy as the type species.[2] It is placed in the tribeHymenocallideae.[5]

Etymology

The generic nameLeptochiton is derived from the Greekleptos meaning thin, delicate, small, or slender, andchiton meaning covering or tunic. It refers to the thin testa.[10]

Phylogeny

It is closely related toIsmene, to which it shared a common ancestor 26.14 million years ago. It is the sister group toHymenocallis, from which it separated 24.46 million years ago.[1]
