Leopold Horner (24 August 1911 – 5 October 2005) was a Germanchemist who published a modifiedWittig reaction usingphosphonate-stabilizedcarbanions now called theHorner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction (HWE reaction) or Horner-Wittig reaction.
Horner started studying chemistry at theUniversity of Heidelberg and later withHeinrich Wieland at theUniversity of Munich. After he received his Ph.D and hishabilitation he worked at the Polymer Research Institute inFrankfurt. In 1953 he became professor at theUniversity of Mainz.
