Lennart Karl (born 22 February 2008) is a German professionalfootballer who plays as anattacking midfielder orright midfielder forBundesliga clubBayern Munich and theGermany national under-21 football team.
Karl joined the academy ofViktoria Aschaffenburg in 2015, and he moved to the academy ofEintracht Frankfurt in 2017. He then rejoined Viktoria Aschaffenburg in 2022, before he caught the eye ofBayern Munich and in the summer of the same year, Karl joined theiracademy.[3] During the 2024–25 season he started with the U17 Nachwuchsliga Group F for Bayern Munich with 17 goals and 8 assists in just 9 appearances.[3] In October 2024 top-flight clubs, like SpanishLa Liga clubReal Madrid and DutchEredivisie clubAjax, showed interest in recruiting him.[4] At only 16 years old of age, Karl already represented both theunder-17 andunder-19 squads during the2024–25 season.
On 4 April 2025, he received his first call-up with the senior team ofBayern Munich, for a 3–1 away victoryBundesliga match againstFC Augsburg, as an unused substitute.[5] Two months later, on 15 June, Karl made his professional debut during a 10–0 victory overAuckland City in theFIFA Club World Cup.[6]
Karl was one of the players that were called up by Bayern Munich head coachVincent Kompany, for the2025 pre-season matches againstLigue 1 clubLyon,Premier League clubTottenham Hotspur, andSwiss Super League clubGrasshopper.[7][8] On 8 August, along with his teammateWisdom Mike, Karl extended his contract with the club and chose to wear the shirt number 42, which was previously worn byJamal Musiala.[9] Later that year, on 22 October, he scored his first professional goal in a 4–0 victory overBelgian Pro League clubClub Brugge in theChampions League, becoming the club's youngest-ever scorer in the competition at 17 years and 242 days old, surpassing the previous record held by Jamal Musiala.[10][11] Three days later, he netted his first Bundesliga goal in a 3–0 away win overBorussia Mönchengladbach.[12] On 22 November, he recorded a goal and an assist in a 6–2 victory overSC Freiburg, becoming the youngest Bayern Munich player to achieve this feat in a single Bundesliga match.[13] A month later, on 9 December, he netted a goal in a 3–1 victory over PortuguesePrimeira Liga clubSporting CP, becoming the youngest player ever to score in three consecutive Champions League matches, breaking previous record ofKylian Mbappé.[14][15]
Karl has represented the Germany national U15,U16,U17 andU21 teams.[16][17]
Karl is a left-footed attacking midfielder, acting as a number 10, sitting behind the striker and dictating play in the final third. He often scores goals from long range. With his intelligence on the ball and considerable goal contributions he has drawn comparisons withThomas Müller,Mesut Özil andBastian Schweinsteiger.[18][3]
