The fossil taxaMictomys,Tobienia (both thought to be allied withSynaptomys), andPlioctomys (thought to be allied withLemmus andMyopus) are also thought to belong to this group.[2]
A 2021 phylogenetic study usingmtDNA recovered Lemmini as being the mostbasal clade of the Arvicolinae, diverging during the lateMiocene, about 8 million years ago.[3]
