Leland Jones Orser (born August 6, 1960) is an American actor, director and writer. He is married to Jeanne Tripplehorn. He has appeared in numerous film and television roles since his debut in 1991, notably as Lucien Dubenko on the television seriesER (2004–09), Father Romero onRay Donovan (2015–16), Richard Stratton onAmerican Gigolo (2022), and Sam Gilroy in theTaken film series (2008–14).

Early life

Orser was born in San Francisco, California on August 6, 1960.[1] He graduated fromConnecticut College in 1982, and studied Acting atDrama Studio London.[2][3]

Career

Orser began his career as a stage actor, and was nominated for aHelen Hayes Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance inThe Secret Rapture in 1991.[4][5] That same year, he made his television debut in 1991 on the seriesGabriel's Fire, and went on to appear in programs such asThe Golden Girls,Cheers,L.A. Law,The X-Files,NYPD Blue,Law & Order: Special Victims Unit andCSI: Crime Scene Investigation. In 1999, he played Dr. Arthur Zeller inThe Outer Limits episode "Descent".

He appeared inSeven (1995) as a man who was involuntarily recruited to kill a prostitute. He was credited as "Crazed Man in Massage Parlour". He played Larry Purvis inAlien Resurrection (1997).

He played the antagonist Richard Thompson in theDenzel Washington thrillerThe Bone Collector (1999). In 2001, he had a role inPearl Harbor as an injured officer saved byKate Beckinsale's character. In 2003, he appeared asWesley Owen Welch in theMarvel Comics superhero filmDaredevil.

Orser also appeared in various roles in theStar Trek franchise, among them playing aChangeling posing as theRomulanColonel Lovok in theStar Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "The Die Is Cast" and in the episode "Sanctuary" playing a bit part as a member of the Skrreean race. He also played a homicidalhologram in theStar Trek: Voyager episode "Revulsion". InStar Trek: Enterprise, he played the character "Loomis" in the time-travel episode "Carpenter Street".[6]

He played Ansel in the drama thriller filmFaults.[7] From 2004–09, he played Chief of Surgery Dr. Lucien Dubenko, a recurring character, onER. Most recently he has appeared inall three of theTaken film series as "Sam".

In 2010, Orser made his directorial debut with the filmMorning.

Personal life

Orser marriedRoma Downey in 1987; they divorced in 1989. In 2000, he marriedJeanne Tripplehorn, with whom he had co-starred inPeter Berg's dark comedyVery Bad Things; they have one son.[8]
