Leikn (Old Norse:[ˈlɛikn]) is a femalejötunn inNorse mythology. The 10th-centuryskaldVetrliði Sumarliðason lists her among the jötnar killed by thethunder godThor.

Name

TheOld Norse nameLeikn has been translated as 'trickery'.[1] Stemming from aProto-Norse form reconstructed as*laikīnō, it is related to the Old Norseleikni ('bewitchment'), and to theOld Englishscīn-lǣce ('sorceress').[2]

The death of Leikn is mentioned in alausavísa composed byVetrliði Sumarliðason which praises Thor for having killedgiants and giantesses:

Leikn's name was used byskalds inkennings.Hallfreðr vandræðaskáld thus uses thekenning "Leikn's horse" (hestr Leiknar) for a wolf (Óláfsdrápa,6) andHallvarðr háreksblesi calls the raven "hawk of Leikn of points" (haukr Leiknar odda) that is "hawk ofvalkyrie" (Knútsdrápa,6).

Leikn is also listed in theþulur.
