Lee Hyun-ju (Korean: 이현주; born 7 February 2003) is a South Korean professionalfootballer who plays as awinger orattacking midfielder forPrimeira Liga clubArouca and theSouth Korea national team.
Lee spent his youth career at Tree Mers FC inAnsan andPohang Steelers.[2]
In January 2022, Lee joined German giantsBayern Munich from Pohang Steelers on a year-long loan deal, with the option to make the deal permanent.[3] After impressing with the club'sreserve team while on loan, Bayern Munich took up the option to make the deal permanent in August 2022, with Lee signing a deal through 2025.[4][5] He played for the reserve team at theRegionalliga Bayern.
On 7 July 2023, Lee was loaned to recently promoted2. Bundesliga clubWehen Wiesbaden for the2023–24 season.[6] On 23 June 2024, he extended his contract with Bayern Munich until 2027 and was loaned to another 2. Bundesliga clubHannover 96 for the2024–25 season, with an option to make the move permanent.[7] He had performed various roles in Bayern's midfield,[8] whereas he mostly played as a winger at the two clubs.[9][10]
On 23 July 2025, Lee moved toPortugal and joinedPrimeira Liga clubArouca, permanently for an estimated €1.5 million fee. The figure was Arouca's highest-ever transfer fee.[11] On 9 August, he provided an assist in a 3–1 win overAVS, where he made his Primeira Liga debut.[12]
Lee has represented South Korea at various youth levels.[1][2][13] He was called up to theSouth Korea Olympic team in September 2022, in preparation for the2024 Summer Olympics.[14]
Lee received his first call-up with theSouth Korea national team for the2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches againstKuwait andPalestine on 14 and 19 November 2024, respectively.[15][16] He made his debut against Kuwait.[17]
Lee has namedJoshua Kimmich as a player he idolises, while also creditingJamal Musiala as a similarly-aged player he looks up to.[3][18]
